Brakes: Your Safety

Disc wear

Each disc has a stamped minimum thickness (MIN THK).

Breaking in new brakes

First 200 km: DON'T brake hard!

  1. 0-50 km: Brake gently
  2. 50-100 km: Slightly harder
  3. 100-200 km: Gradually increase

Why is this important?

ComponentConsequences of ignoring
Worn pads (down to metal)Metal backing grinds disc β†’ deep grooves β†’ disc needs replacement (+300-800 PLN per disc)
Disc thinner than MINOverheating during braking β†’ warping (pedal pulsation) β†’ cracks β†’ RISK OF DISC FAILURE
Seized caliper slidesPads don't retract from disc β†’ constant friction β†’ overheating β†’ premature wear

Why 200 km break-in is critical:

New pads and discs have micro-irregularities. With aggressive braking:

  • Localized overheating β†’ uneven pad material transfer
  • "Hot spots" form on disc β†’ permanent vibration when braking
  • Premature pad wear of 20-30%

Rule: First 200 km brake gently - it's an investment in 2x longer brake life.

Tips

  • Check MIN marking on the disc
  • Break in new brakes for 200 km
  • Don't ignore squealing or vibration
