Why engine overheating is dangerous
Overheating is one of the most serious problems for both petrol and diesel engines. Just a few minutes of driving at critical temperature can lead to a head gasket failure, a warped cylinder head, or major engine damage.
Early warning signs
- the temperature gauge climbs above normal;
- an overheating warning appears on the dashboard;
- steam comes from under the bonnet;
- cabin heat becomes weak or inconsistent;
- the cooling fan runs almost constantly.

Other factors
Overheating can also be caused by air trapped in the system, leaking hoses, a failed head gasket, or overdue coolant replacement.
What the driver should do immediately
- Stop in a safe place and switch the engine off.
- Do not open the coolant cap immediately while the system is still hot.
- Turn on hazard lights and let the engine cool down.
- Check coolant level only after cooling.
- Do not continue driving if the temperature rises again quickly.
Never pour cold water into an overheated engine — sudden temperature shock can damage metal components.

- oil mixing with coolant.
When professional diagnosis is needed
If overheating keeps coming back, coolant level drops, bubbles appear in the expansion tank, or the oil shows a light-coloured emulsion, the car should be inspected urgently.
