Windshield Washer Fluid: Summer, Winter, Bug Remover

Windshield Washer: Types and Features

Types of Windshield Washers

Summer washer

  • Operating temperature: from +5°C
  • Effectively removes dust and insects
  • Freezes at subzero temperatures!

Winter washer

  • Temperature: down to -20°C or -30°C (depending on concentration)
  • Does not freeze in cold weather
  • Contains alcohol (isopropyl or ethyl)

Bug remover (summer concentrate)

  • Effectively removes insect residue
  • Contains active solvents
  • Not for winter use

IMPORTANT: Change Before Frosts

Why you shouldn’t leave water or summer washer for winter

Freezing consequences:

  • Broken washer tank
  • Damaged pump
  • Cracked tubes
  • Damaged nozzles

Repair costs:

  • Tank replacement: 200-500 PLN
  • Pump replacement: 100-300 PLN
  • Tube replacement: 50-150 PLN

When to switch to winter?

Below +5°C or when forecasts predict night frost.

Better to change earlier! First frosts are always unexpected.

How to Replace Correctly

If there is water or summer washer in the tank:

  1. Completely drain the remaining fluid
  2. Flush the system with clean water (at above-zero temperatures)
  3. Pour in winter washer
  4. Pump the system – press the washer several times

How to drain remaining fluid:

  • Press washer until tank is empty
  • Or disconnect the tube at the tank

Choosing Winter Washer

What to consider:

TemperatureApplication
up to -10°CModerate climate
up to -20°CMost regions
up to -30°CSevere frost

Important!

  • Do not dilute concentrate beyond instructions
  • Do not mix brands
  • Check expiration date

Why It Matters

What happens if washer freezes:

ComponentFreezing Consequences
Washer tankWater expands → plastic cracks → leak (replacement 200-500 PLN)
PumpIce blocks rotor → coil burns out → pump replacement 100-300 PLN
System tubesFrozen water breaks connections → no fluid supply
NozzlesIce blocks holes → after thawing, fluid sprays incorrectly → adjustment or replacement needed
Nozzle heaterIf present, element may burn out when operating on ice

Safety critical:

  • Road dirt = zero visibility in seconds
  • Without washer → stop on the roadside (dangerous) or blind driving (very dangerous)
  • Fine for faulty washer: up to 300 PLN

Driver mistakes:

  • “Add a bit of winter to summer” → mixture freezes at -5°C instead of -20°C
  • “Leave overnight, it’ll warm up” → first frosts are unexpected
  • “Buy the cheapest” → low-quality fluid leaves streaks, evaporates faster

Twin Torque Service Tips

  1. Replace early – don’t wait for frost
  2. Keep a spare in the trunk during winter
  3. Check fluid level regularly

Advice

  • Switch to winter at +5°C or below
  • Completely drain summer washer before replacing
  • Keep spare winter washer in trunk
  • Do not over-dilute the concentrate
