Types of washer fluids and why it's important to change before frost.
Types of Washer Fluids
Summer fluid
- Temperature: from +5°C
- Freezes at sub-zero temperatures!
Winter fluid
- Temperature: down to -20°C or -30°C
- Doesn't freeze in frost
Bug remover
- Effectively removes insect residue
- Not for winter use
IMPORTANT: Change before frost
Consequences of freezing:
- Tank rupture
- Pump damage
- Cracked hoses
When to change to winter?
When temperature below +5°C
Why is this important?
| Component | Freezing consequences |
|---|---|
| Washer reservoir | Water expands when frozen → cracks in plastic → leakage (replacement 200-500 PLN) |
| Washer pump | Ice blocks impeller → motor burns out when activated → replacement 100-300 PLN |
| System hoses | Frozen water ruptures connections → hoses burst → no fluid delivery to windshield |
| Nozzles | Ice plugs openings → water sprays wrong direction after thawing |
Why this is critical for safety:
- Road spray from oncoming traffic = zero visibility in seconds
- Without washer fluid in this situation → stop on shoulder (dangerous) or drive blind (deadly)
Rule: Change fluid before frost - costs 20-50 PLN, system repair costs 300-800 PLN.
Tips
- Change to winter fluid at +5°C and below
- Completely drain summer fluid
- Keep spare winter fluid in the trunk
